How to properly  allow Windows 7 access to Windows XP shares
How to: Windows 7 (x64) properly access Windows XP shares (share/permissions are set, workgroups are set and visible, this is specifically about access, not discovery): There seems to be some auto-login going on. Win7 doesn't even ask for credentials to access a share with specific user permissions. What/how is this configured properly? - to pop a login, and not try to access "automatically". There are some terrible suggestions about giving Full Control Access to "EVERYONE" in other threads so hopefully there is a clear answer to this from MS. Yes, that works, but its not the right way to do things. XP box has shares - share/permissions are set My Mac workstation has zero issues, it asks for credentials to be supplied in order to access share, and does so Win7 box can see the shares and can access files on those with "everyone" + read, no issue We all know its dumb to do this (but its what I've had to do to get work done) This is likely what a bunch of people are doing, thinking its "the fix" - making whatever security goals originally intended, well, wasted Any share on the XP box with specific users and permissions set, Win7 just stops and says "can't access", no request for credentials - ergo the question - seems some auto-login is going on. How to configure/disable/enable at will, etc. There are some suggestions to disable "homegroup" entirely - what is that? Is there a clear definition of how "homegroup" works? Not to worry, I maybe a newbie to win7 but definitely not one when it comes to networking. So technical documentation is fine. It's ____! http://dailycrapola.spaces.live.com/

Hi, Can you visit Windows XP folders by using \\hostname\share or \\ipaddress\share? Try to temporally disable firewall on both Windows XP and Windows 7. Enable Network Discovery. Click Start->Control Panel->Network and Sharing Center, click Change advanced sharing settings. Enable the option. Turn on Password protected sharing and turn off public folder sharing. In addition, in the Share tab of the file properties, click Share button, make sure the user is added. Click the Advanced sharing button and also add user here. If the issue persists, please tell me what exact error is received.
